The fascia is the board your gutter hangs off. When it goes soft, the gutter goes with it. We replace rotten timber and fit capping so the new guttering has something solid to hold on to.
What Fascia Work Includes
Fascia does two jobs. It closes off the ends of the rafters and it carries the gutter. Once a gutter has been leaking behind it for a few years, the timber underneath is usually the first casualty, and there is no sense hanging new guttering on it until that is sorted.
- Gutter removed so the fascia can be inspected along its full length
- Rotten or split boards identified and shown to you before anything comes off
- Damaged sections cut out and replaced with new timber
- Rafter ends checked, since rot rarely stops neatly at the fascia
- New fascia fixed, aligned and set straight for the gutter to follow
- Metal capping fitted over sound timber where you want it maintenance free
- Left primed and ready for paint, or capped so it never needs painting again
- Gutter refitted, or new guttering installed once the fascia is sound
How the Job Runs
Fascia work is usually discovered rather than planned. Most of ours starts as a gutter job that turned into something more once the old run came off.
Expose and inspect
The gutter comes off and we look at the full length of the board. Rot is almost always worse than the visible patch suggests, because the wet has spread along the grain.
Show you the damage
Photographs, and in person if you are home. You see what we see before any decision gets made about scope or cost.
Repair or replace
Sound sections stay. Damaged sections are cut out and replaced with new timber, fixed back to the rafters properly rather than nailed to whatever is left of the old board.
Finish and refit
Primed for painting, or capped in metal if you would rather never paint it again. Then the guttering goes back on straight and to fall.
What It Costs
Fascia is priced on how much of it needs doing and how hard it is to get at. The main factors:
- Lineal metres of board being repaired or replaced
- Whether the rafter ends are also affected, which is common on long term leaks
- Timber replacement versus metal capping over timber that is still sound
- Single or double storey, and how the roof edge has to be accessed
- Whether guttering has to come off and go back on as part of the work
- Painting, which we can leave primed for your painter or arrange separately
On a gutter replacement we often cannot price the fascia up front, because the board sits behind the gutter and we cannot see all of it. What we can do is tell you it is a risk before we start, and price it with you on the day rather than after the fact.
Why Fascia Gets Ignored Until It Fails
Fascia sits behind the gutter where nobody looks, which is exactly why problems there run for years before anyone notices them.
Hidden by the gutter
You cannot see the face of the board with a gutter hanging on it. By the time paint is bubbling on the visible edge or the gutter line is dipping, the timber behind has usually been wet a long time.
It carries the load
Every bracket on your gutter is fixed into the fascia, and a full gutter is heavy. Soft timber lets brackets pull, the gutter drops, the fall goes, and then it holds water and gets heavier still.
Rot travels
Water in timber moves along the grain and into whatever it touches. Left long enough it reaches the rafter ends, and at that point it stops being a fascia job and becomes a carpentry one.
Fascia FAQs
Flaking or bubbling paint along the board, a gutter line that dips or waves rather than running straight, dark staining, or timber that gives when you press it. Any one of those is worth having looked at.
No. The gutter is fixed directly to the board being replaced, so on a fascia job the gutter always comes off. That is exactly why fascia work and gutter replacement so often get done together.
A metal cover fitted over existing timber fascia. It protects the board from weather and means you never paint it again. It is only worth doing over timber that is still structurally sound. Capping over rot just hides it and makes it worse.
Whichever is genuinely right. If a two metre section has gone and the rest is solid, we cut out the section. If the rot has travelled the length of an elevation, replacing the run costs less than chasing it in pieces.
New timber goes up primed and ready for paint, so once it is painted it matches. Metal capping comes in a colour range and can be matched to either the gutter or the roof.
We can leave it primed for your painter, which is what most people prefer, or arrange painting as part of the job. Tell us which at quote stage so we can allow for it properly.
Rot from a long term gutter leak is treated as maintenance and is not covered. Sudden storm damage sometimes is. Photograph everything before it is touched if you intend to claim.
A single elevation is often a day including refitting the gutter. A full house, or a job where rafter ends need attention, runs longer. We give you a realistic duration with the quote.
